SpongeBob Squarepants Hat Pattern
Randy's niece Melinda absolutly loves SpongeBob so I've been thinking about this hat for a while. I post-poned starting it forever telling myself I had to think about it some more. I cast on and finished all in the same night. I wanted the hat to BE SpongeBob, not just have a little picture of him on it or something (although that may be a later pattern). You will need to know how to knit and crochet to complete this hat. Below you can see more pictures including ones of his little pom pom feet. Feel free to make one for yourself or as gifts but please do not sell them. If you share the pattern please share the link and not the pattern itself.

Supplies:

• Brown Worsted Weight Yarn Less than 1/4 Red Heart Skein
• Yellow Worsted Weight Yarn Less than 1/2 Red Heart Skein
• White Worsted Weight Yarn for Shirt, eyes, and teeth
• Scrap of Blue for embroidering eyes.
• Small Amount of Black for eyelashes and Boot Pom Poms
• Scrap of Red for Mouth and Tie
• Tapestry Needle
• Size E Crochet Hook
• Size I Crochet Hook
• Size 8 Circular Knitting Needles and/or Dpn's

To Make Earflaps (Which represent the legs of his shorts) {Make 2}:
Cast on 5 stitches with Brown
Row 1: Knit
Row 2: Purl
Row 3: K2, M1, K1, M1, K2 (7 stitches)
Row 4: Purl
Row 5: K2, M1, K3, M1, K2 (9 stitches)
Row 6: Purl
Row 7: K2, M1, K5, M1, K2 (11 stitches)
Row 8: Purl
Row 9: K2, M1, K7, M1, K2 (13 stitches)
Row 10: Purl
Row 11: K2, M1, K9, M1, K2 (15 stitches)
Row 12: Purl
Row 13: K2, M1, K11, M1, K2 (17 stitches)
Row 14: Purl
Row 15: K2, M1, K13, M1, K2 (19 stitches)
Row 16: Purl
Row 17: Knit
Row 18: Purl
Row 19: Knit
Row 20: Purl
Detach yarn from 1st earflap you can leave it on your circulars or put it on a stitch holder and make 2nd but do not detach yarn from second earflap.

To Make Body of Hat:
Starting with second earflap with yarn still attached
Row 1: Knit across 19 stitches of earflap, Cast on 16 stitches using backwards loop, Knit across 19 stitches of 2nd earflap, Cast on 26 stitches using backwards loop, Place Marker and join.
Row 2-11: Knit at the end of row 11 tie off Brown and Join White.
Row12-16: Knit at the end or row 16 tie off White and Join Yellow.
With Yellow Knit until Hat is desired length then begin decrease rows.
DecR1: *K8, K2tog* repeat from * to *.
DecR2: *K7, K2tog* repeat from * to *.
DecR3: Knit
DecR4: *K6, K2tog* repeat from * to *.
DecR5: Knit
DecR6: *K5, K2tog* repeat from * to *.
DecR7: Knit
DecR8: *K4, K2tog* repeat from * to *.
DecR9: Knit
DecR10: *K3, K2tog* repeat from * to *.
DecR11: *K2, K2tog* repeat from * to *.
DecR12: *K1, K2tog* repeat from * to *.
DecR13: K2tog across
Cut yarn leaving a tail to thread through remaining stitches and pull up tight.
With Brown and Size E Crochet Hook single crochet around bottom edge of hat to help stop stockinette stitch from curling.

Tie:
With Size E crochet Hook and Red Yarn
Ch 5, Join with sl stitch
6 sc in ring, Join with sl stitch
Ch 3, 2 dc. Turn.
Ch 2, 4 sc in previous row. Turn.
2 sc in center stitches of next row. Tie off. Sew onto White Shirt portion of hat in the center of the 26 stitch section.

Mouth:
With Size E crochet Hook and Red Yarn
Ch 10, Turn.
Sl stitch is 1st 3 sts, sc, hdc, sc, slip st in last 3 sts. Turn
Sk 1st sl st, sl st in next 2 sts, sc, hdc, sc, hdc, sl st in next 3 sts. Turn
Repeat last row once more. Fasten off. Sew onto yellow section in center bottom of 26 st section.

Teeth {Make 2}:
With White and size E crochet Hook
Ch 3, Turn
Skip 1st ch and sc in next 2 chain. Fasten off.
Sew teeth onto mouth.

Nose:
With Size E crochet hook and Yellow
Ch 6, Join with slip st.
(Ch 3 , 6 dc in row) note the Ch 3 counts as the 1st dc.
Repeat previous row 2 more times.
Stuff nose with scrap yarn, paper, toilet tissue, etc to make it stand up better. Cut yarn and thread it through the remaining stitches and pull tight. Weave in end as this is the front of the nose. Sew onto Face.

Eyes: {Make 2}
With Size E crochet hook and White
Ch4, Join with sl st
Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), 5 more dc in ring.
Ch 3, 2 dc in each stitch. Fasten off.
Sew onto Face, then using blue embroider pupils onto eyes, then with black embroider eyelashes onto eyes. Don't leave off the eyelashes and they are an important feature of spongebob's face.

Arms: {Make 2}
With Size I crochet Hook and Yellow
Ch 9
Turn and single crochet in 3rd Ch from hook 3 times.
Sew arms onto side of shirt.

With White Doubled and I hook Crochet a chain as long as you desire and attach to hat
Make 2 Black Pom Poms and attach to chains.

Make sure all ends are woven in on the hat. Enjoy! Happy Knitting!
